Everyone deserves healthy, beautiful skin. It's the big "why" in why we do what we do every single day. No matter your skin type, tone or needs, good skin health is essential and we'll do anything we can to make it possible for you.
Scattered throughout the internet are articles and reports, some science-backed and others anecdotal, about the universality of skincare for all skin tones. Should people with melanin-rich skin use retinoids? Do darker complexions need to use SPF? Will laser treatments do more damage than good? Skin needs vary person to person, complexion to complexion - This we know. While not every formula is made equal, we can confidently demystify some of these common misconceptions regarding the skin health of those with darker tones.
Anti-Ageing Needs
Yes, it's true - Darker skin tones do not show signs of ageing as quickly as those with lighter complexions. This advantage is predominantly due to the smaller collagen bonds found within the skin along with higher concentrations of collagen and elastin, which help to protect your complexion from ultraviolet rays more than other tones. This, however, does not mean you should opt out of anti-ageing skincare products, especially sunscreen. While fine lines may not be your primary concern, other skin troubles may form like the loss of firmness, discolouration and skin cancer. No one is immune to the consequences of unprotected sun exposure. So please, wear your SPF 30+
Tackling Hyperpigmentation
Our Glow Getters with melanin-rich skin often reach out to us looking to treat discolouration and hyperpigmentation. In fact, it's one of the most common skin concerns for those with darker complexions due to the higher levels of melanin that tend to concentrate and form into dark spots. But fear not, there is no spot we cannot treat with our high-quality formulations and a bit of consistency. We will always recommend adding a vitamin c treatment, our Super C, to your morning routine every single day when tackling discolouration. We tend to couple it with the appropriate retinol strength (Retinol 30 for newbies and delicate skin or Retinol 60 for experienced users) for your skin type in the evening 1-3 times a week. Your complexion will become more even-toned with every passing use!
Last but not least, these are a few tried-and-true, universal skincare rules that any and all can follow:
Irritating scrubs, facial brushes and cleansing tools are a thing of the past. Avoid anything that can cause micro-tears to your skin and opt for gentle, physical exfoliants, if need be.
When applying active ingredients, always spot test along the chin to avoid any unnecessary irritation.
When using an active ingredient, start low (percentage or strength) and go slow (start use 1 time a week).
SPF every morning, seriously.
