How To Choose a Skin-Friendly Mask

How To Choose a Skin-Friendly Mask

We're well past the six-month mark of the COVID-19 pandemic, and mask-wearing has simply become a normal part of our lives. In this time, we've discovered that even though wearing one is a simple-yet-powerful thing we can all do to stay safe, the maskne and impact on our skin is so real.

We've done a lot of trial and error over these last few months when it come to selecting the best mask for your skin, and one thing has become clear: not all masks are created equal. Today, we're taking you through some things to consider when it comes to choosing a skin-friendly mask, and sharing some recommendations from our favourite Canadian companies.

Material Matters

The most important thing you have to consider is that you have a mask that will prevent the spread of germs. Canadian guidelines suggest that masks must "be made of at least 2 layers of tightly woven material fabric" in order to be effective, so above all make sure you've got that taken care of and that the shape covers your nose, mouth and chin. Safety first, friends!

When it comes to material, "tightly woven" fabrics like cotton, linen, polyester and silk are all excellent options. We've seen some other fabrics like leather and even mesh out there - and while they make look cool as an accessory, the former would just aggravate maskne and the latter just simply doesn't do the job it's supposed to.

Which is best for minimal breakouts?

If we had to choose, cotton, polyester and silk would be our top material choices. They are breathable, comfortable on the face, and allow for airflow and limited moisture that might irritate the skin.

Our Founder Ann is loving silk masks especially, as they were really great for warmer weather and are gentle on sensitive skin. As we go into the cooler months, polyester and cotton options are great for staying a little warmer without causing too much skin trouble.
