Like you, we have been carefully listening over the last week as systemic racism and its deadly impact have rightfully been front and centre across the news, our social feeds and in conversations amongst our families, community and our team.
We want to acknowledge that things are not “business as usual,” and we want to reiterate the message we shared across social media this past weekend: we stand with the Black members of our community and support the fight to end police brutality and dismantle the systems that continue to incite violence, murder, exclusion and oppression. We also acknowledge how pervasive these issues are for the Indigenous community and all communities of colour in our home country of Canada.
Our team is in active discussions to determine how we can tangibly back this sentiment with action – we’re exploring organizations to support, looking inward to identify our own shortcomings and blind spots that contribute to upholding white supremacy, and we’re developing ways we can share our platform to amplify Black, Indigenous and POC voices. Our Founder Ann-Marie MacDonald and Director Elizabeth Lista are working to finalize the details of these efforts for both the short and long-term, and we are looking forward to sharing that with you this month.
On Thursdays, we typically send our weekend promotion – we still have one scheduled (details below), but we also ask that you consider donating to one of the worthy organizations or fundraisers we’ve personally been supporting and sharing this week, outlined below.
Finally, our focus right now is on two key things: backing our commitments with positive action and listening. We know we have shortcomings as an organization. We're compiling them, and are developing an action plan for how we're going to address them. We plan to share it all with you. If there is something you recognize as a blind spot for us that you want to call out, let us know. If there is a fundraiser or organization that you’d like us to know about, share it.
