  1. The outermost layer of the skin (the stratum corneum) that acts as a protective shield. 

  2. The body's primary defence that keeps essential moisture and nutrients in, while preventing external stressors, pollutants, allergens, and harmful microorganisms from entering.

  3. The term can be used interchangeably with moisture barrier or lipid barrier.


Skin Barrier is a term that gets thrown around a lot… But what are we really talking about here? Your skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin. It lives at the top of your epidermis and is composed of the corneocytes (dead skin cells) and supporting lipids (what holds the cells together). We like to imagine our skin barrier as a brick wall.

As such, it functions as your frontline defence. Its duty as the outer wall is to keep moisture in, irritants out, and maintain a healthy balance of microorganisms. But when this barrier is compromised by harsh treatments, the environment, or sometimes worst of all, stress, you might experience tightness, redness, dry flakiness, sensitivity, and even breakouts.
